Town Council considered a report at the September 26, 2023 meeting (SR-292-2023) which contemplated the future possibility of a Municipal Accommodation Tax (MAT).
At that meeting, Council discussed a desire to see the implementation of a MAT be paired with a licensing program for Short Term Accommodations (STAs), should either program be implemented.
The Town is seeking input from the public to better understand existing needs, challenges and opportunities relating to a potential MAT. A summary of all feedback received will be provided to Council for consideration and will be used to inform the recommendations made by Town staff.
What is a Municipal Accommodation Tax (MAT)?
A MAT is a tax imposed by the municipality on the price of short termovernight accommodations (under a month) within the municipal boundaries. The tax is typically applied to hotels, motels, bed and breakfasts, and other lodging and is collected from guests at the time of booking. The tax is also typically applied to short term accommodations such as Airbnb, VRBO, etc. when they are licensed in the municipality. The main purpose of the MAT is to generate additional revenue to support municipal initiatives such as tourism promotion and public services that will benefit residents and visitors.
